10 Gardening Tips for Monsoon Season

Monsoon season brings many reasons for celebration. Monsoons relieve the living organisms from hot summer waves. Agriculture activities begin in full swing. Plant bloom and flower during this season. But sometimes due to excessive rainfall, strong winds, and high humidity plants suffer from different abiotic and biotic stresses. Following are 10 gardening tips for monsoon season:

1. Drainage

Water management in the garden includes both irrigation and drainage. Both irrigation and drainage are equally important. During the rainy season drainage of excess water is very important. Stagnation of water in a field or garden for a long period has reported a drastic loss in the yield of the crop. Corns are very sensitive to waterlogging.24 hrs of waterlogging in maize can reduce the yield up to 75 %. So, before the rainy season, it should be made sure that drainage channels are maintained so that excess water can be drained out immediately.

2. Disease Management

Fungal diseases are very common during the rainy season. Humid conditions provide a congenial environment for the growth of fungus on plants. So, keeping some fungicides handy will be a wise decision. If the plants are planted in pots then increase the spacing between the pots to reduce the risk of spreading of disease. In the case of indoor plants, the provision of sunlight at regular intervals of time should be arranged.

3. Pest Management

Mites, bugs, worms are very abundant during the rainy season. Severe infestation can destroy the whole plant if they are not taken care of on the time. Regular monitoring and hand removal is the best method to manage them. But, if the infestation is severe, spraying of recommended insecticide should be done. Organic insecticides like neem oil, Bt products can be also be used.

4. Weed Management

Weeds also receive an abundant amount of rain along with the crop plants. Weeds generally outgrowths the plants if they are not managed in the early stage of plant growth. Weeds compete with the different resources of the crop plants. Hence, regular weeding should be done during the monsoon season.

5. Pruning

The plant receives an abundant amount of rain during the season and the plants flourish to the fullest. Most of the plants produce huge amounts of foliage which is not desired. So, pruning of unwanted foliage becomes an important operation during the season to keep the plants in proper shape and size.

Sometimes plants are damaged due to heavy rainfall and hailstorms. Complete or partial cover should be provided for plants to prevent damage to plants.

8. Nutrition

Heavy rain washes the top fertile layer of soil making to soil deprive of nutrients. This more often happens if the plants are grown in pots or bags. Applying necessary nutrients becomes very essential.  Also, mulching can be done in wide-spaced crops to prevent the erosion of the top layer of soil and to retain the soil nutrients.

9. Release Earthworms

Earthworms are known as natural ploughs as they loosen the soil along with the addition of nutrients to the soil. Earthworms love moist soil and give their best performance during the rainy season. Releasing suitable species of earthworm in the garden during the rainy season is recommended to maintain the soil structure by avoiding soil compaction and also enriching the soil with nutrients.
